Holiday decorating: Pomegranate door swag of fruit and feathers
FESTIVE FALL DOOR SWAG
Pomegranates make a gorgeous holiday swag in this project from POM Wonderful, the company behind farms that supply fresh pomegranates, pomegranate juice and jars of ready-to-eat arils, the juicy seeds nestled inside the pomegranate's thick husk.
2 black or green chenille stems
White craft glue
12-by-4-by-2-inch block Styrofoam
3 oranges
Whole cloves
6 Pom Wonderful pomegranates
3 artichokes
16 magnolia leaves
30 greening pins
green sheet moss
7 pheasant feathers
24 6-inch wood florist picks
25 wired 2-1/2-inch florist picks
Tools: wire cutters, scissors, low-temperature glue gun, glue sticks
1. Create a loop with the two chenille stems. Create the hanger by attaching the chenille loop to the back of the Styrofoam with greening pins dipped white glue and pressed into Styrofoam to hold in place.
2. Cover the Styrofoam base with sheet moss, using greening pins to hold in place.
3. Press cloves into the oranges to make a pattern, a shown. Insert two wooden florist picks into each orange, pomegranate and artichoke, about 1 to 2 inches apart. Insert the pomegranates, oranges and artichokes into the Styrofoam to create an attractive presentation, as in the photo above.
4. With 2-1/2-inch wired florist picks, wrap each magnolia leaf stem with wire to attach the pick. Press picks into the swag, accenting it with the leaves, as shown, alternating leaf placement so that both green and brown sides are visible.
5. Attach 2-1/2-inch wired florist picks to stem and tip ends of two of the pheasant feathers. Loop to create arcs at the top of the swag, as shown. Attach picks to stems of the remaining feathers and insert, as shown.
Notes: The weight of this swag requires a sturdy nail or hook to hold it on door or wall (Do not nail into your door if it is made of fiberglass or metal. Use an over-door hanger instead.) For wall display, place the nail or hook into a wall stud to be sure its weight is safely supported.
While most of the supplies are available at area craft stores, some items, such as the magnolia leaves and the feathers, may need to be ordered online or purchased through a florist.
