Afternoon tea for two or twenty at Mulberry House in Westfield

Tea service at Mulberry House Restaurant and Tea Room in Westfield. Steps from the Westfield train station, at 415 Westfield Ave., Mulberry House hosts lunch and tea service that is posh but free of stiff tradition.

In a converted two-story Victorian, owner Jenna DeLorenzi has outfitted four light-filled dining rooms in this restaurant and tea room. Starched white cloths cover tables, each with a partially open sunflower in a teapot, the signature flower arrangement.

In each room, elevated platters laced with ribbon are tucked away on shelves in purpose-made wall niches. They support tea service, such as the $26 tea stand for one (soup or salad, two scones, two tea sandwiches and two sweets). Here, even a single scone will be presented on a pedestal.

The gently sweetened Mulberry House clotted cream is made in the bustling restaurant kitchen, and all baking is done on site. The menu includes sandwiches, mini tarts, crème brulee, cakes and a truffle candy of the day. Staff pastry chefs will make holiday pies and cookie trays to order.

Stuffed French toast is a Mulberry House brunch favorite.Mulberry House has whimsical tea pots in its collection to delight the little ladies and gents who come for lunch or for the tea parties that can be staged for those ages 6 to 13. Those parties are among the many possibilities for on-site or at-home events.

Enjoy weekend brunch at the restaurant (reservations are already open to ease into 2020 with New Year's Day Champagne Brunch), or try the home-delivered Brunch in a Basket. Book a home tea party with staff. The restaurant offers catering services, and the restaurant is available for holiday party rentals. Reservations are recommended. Mulberry House is sometimes closed for private events.

Try the restaurant's teas, sweets and sandwiches at a winter tea tasting event at 7 p.m. on Jan. 22. Each hot tea will be paired with something delicious and healthy to start things right for the new year.
